Food charity Magic Breakfast launches new Great Big Breakfast fundraiser for hungry schoolchildren

National food charity Magic Breakfast will launch its inaugural fundraiser Great Big Breakfast next month and is encouraging people across the UK to sign up, host a breakfast, and raise vital funds for hungry children.

The charity is calling on the public to enjoy a breakfast together with friends, family, colleagues, or by themselves, on one morning during the week of 7-13 June, and be part of Magic Breakfast’s first ever Great Big Breakfast.

Magic Breakfast is the UK’s leading charity for breakfast provision. Now marking its 20th year, the charity supports over 1,000 schools in disadvantaged areas of the UK, offering healthy breakfasts to around 170,000 children each school day, ensuring they start their day with the energy and nutrition they need to make the most of their morning lessons.

Great Big Breakfast participants can host breakfasts at their kitchen tables, in their gardens, offices, favourite cafés or virtually over Zoom, and donate £2 per person to Magic Breakfast – which is enough to fund more than a week’s worth of school breakfasts for a child at risk of hunger, so they have the fuel to succeed in and out of the classroom.

The charity has made it easy to get involved in Great Big Breakfast, encouraging the public to host breakfasts however they choose; whether dippy eggs at home with family, a bowl of cereal over Zoom with colleagues, or a fun-filled breakfast picnic with friends in the park with games – everyone is encouraged to get creative and hold a breakfast in a way and time suitable to them during the week of 7-13 June.

Actress Sarah Hadland, supporter of Magic Breakfast said:

“I’m really excited to take part in the Great Big Breakfast – I’ll be hosting a breakfast on Instagram with my friends Russell Tovey and Steven Carter-Bailey from Bake Off – who will be helping us make healthy, tasty flapjacks. We’ll be encouraging all our followers to donate £2 to Magic Breakfast, which can give a child breakfast for a week which is amazing – you can’t even buy a coffee for £2 these days. It’s a small amount for most but will make a massive impact.

“During lockdown a lot of people became aware of how the pandemic has affected those who are struggling financially, especially families who are struggling to put food on the table. There are a lot of children who don’t get breakfast at home, so I’m proud to support Magic Breakfast who are making sure children get a healthy breakfast when they arrive at school to set them up for the day. I hope lots of people get together from 7-13 June and host their own Great Big Breakfast, it’s a brilliant way to make a big difference to hungry children.”

Katy Ellis, Fundraising Manager at Magic Breakfast said:

“During the second week of June, up to 170,000 children in our partner schools across England and Scotland will be sitting down to eat their healthy Magic Breakfasts and we want people across the UK to join them. It’s really easy to get involved in Great Big Breakfast; all you have to do is sign up, pick a date, and come together with your friends, family, or colleagues – or you can do it alone – and take the time to enjoy a breakfast and donate just £2 to help provide a week of breakfasts to a hungry child.

“In a year where children have been impacted more than ever by hunger, it’s never been more crucial to take action and fundraise for children who may not have much to eat at home. A healthy breakfast can provide the energy to help a child to succeed in the classroom and beyond, so we hope everyone will get involved, sign up for Great Big Breakfast, and raise money to help fuel children’s successes.”

According to the Food Foundation, an estimated 2.3 million children lived in households that experienced food insecurity in the 6 months up to January 2021.

In addition to helping tackle child hunger, healthy school breakfasts have been found to improve children’s emotional, physical and mental wellbeing as well as their educational attainment.

Magic Breakfast has put together a Great Big Breakfast fundraising pack which is available to download for anyone who signs up for the event, packed with breakfast and fundraising ideas to help make sure breakfast is a big success.
