Asda increases food donations by 58% and gives 4.2m meals in 2019

Asda has announced that it increased the amount of food donated to charity by a whopping 58% in the past year, according to figures published as part of the retailer’s annual food waste and surplus data. Asda has opened its new sustainability trial store and unveiled a new plastics reduction strategy with a promise that customers will not pay more for greener options. Asda launches a range of plastic free crackers, cards and gift bags

This year, Asda has launched its first sustainable Christmas range, which will save a huge 66 tonnes of plastic this year – the equivalent of nearly 3,000 real Christmas trees.   Continuing its commitments to helping customers to reduce, re-use and recycle more, the range features glitter-free cards, wrap and gift-bags, which would in previous years have contained small particles of plastic.   This year, customers will be able to purchase a pack of 12 festive crackers which are made from 100% recyclable content, including the gift inside. Asda has become the first supermarket to trial a new form of electric assisted cargo bike, allowing customers to receive their weekly food shop with zero carbon emissions.
